Tips for businessmen:
  • As is the case in much of Europe, it may be more difficult to make business appointments and contacts in the Czech Republic during the month of August and close to major holidays such as Christmas.
  • Etiquette is important. It is the same - to the Czechs as to the rest of the Europeans.
  • Shake hands to welcome your counterpart. A firm handshake is viewed as sign of honesty and openness. Usually it is the woman or the older, or the more distinguished man, who offers a handshake first.
  • Always arrive on time. It is viewed as a sign of reliability and responsibility.
  • Lunch is the main meal during the day. Supper is usually much smaller and lighter.
  • Calling somebody by first name has a special meaning. It should first be offered by the woman or the older or the more respected man.
  • Smoking should be requested first.
  • Learn a few Czech words to show respect and friendship. Czech people greatly appreciate when foreigners try to speak even the most basic words.

Business Structure:
The Czech Commercial Code establishes business structures and the various types of establishment:
  • Joint stock company (a.s.)
  • Limited liability company (s.r.o.)
  • Branch of a foreign company, Limited partnership (k.s.)
  • nlimited liability company or General partnership (v.o.s.)
  • Cooperative (druzstvo)
  • Individuals do business as - entrepreneurs.
